One of the most impressive aspects of the trance duo is their ability to deliver fresh material all while maintaining the integrity of the original sound that made us fall in love with their music in the first place.  One of the most recent examples is their remix of Ronski Speed’s newest single “Run To The Sunlight”.  A daring departure from the original version, Kyau & Albert’s remix is definitely an homage to their famous electro-trance sound with some familiar samples of their own recent singles.  While the original is more mellow and slower tempo at times, this remix goes into full trance mode and gives the song that bass pumping yet melodic feel that is sure to get the dance floor going.  One would imagine this would be a staple of many DJ sets this summer all over the world.  Check out here:

Allow me to introduce myself..Shaina’s the name, but most of you probably know me as SvB. I’ve been obsessed with music since as far back as I can remember. Seriously. One of my earliest memories is hanging out in pre-school listening to Barney songs on a cassette tape. From there on out, I cycled through various genres: pop, R&B, underground, alternative, and finally settled on EDM (trance) in mid-2008.

Discovering trance was like a breath of fresh air. Never in my 18 years of life had I EVER heard music that invoked such an emotional rush within me. It was (and still is) the only genre of music that can make me want to laugh and cry at the same time; it’s a beautiful feeling, really it is. Some of my first artists were Armin van Buuren, Markus Schulz, Paul van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, ATB, and Above & Beyond. Fun fact: I have since named this group of kings the “Justice League of Trance”. Anywho..I went to my first event in October of 2008 called Trippendicular 5. Had the TIME OF MY LIFE! Heard some amazing tunes, met some incredible people. Coming from the mainstream, I was not used to people being so kind and welcoming. I knew instantly that this was where I was meant to be.

Three and a half years later, I am still in love with trance as much as I was on day one. I am so happy to finally be a part of a crew that shares the same love and passion for trance as I do. Looking forward to meeting each and every one of the loyal TFSF members out at events; come say hi! I don’t bite..hard .

Having been the DJ Mag’s #1 voted act four years in a row prior to David Guetta, Armin is nothing short of a household name to those in the know of electronic music, whether you like or dislike him.  Now for those who are fans of trance, he is perhaps the biggest subject of debate.  Love, hate, acclaim, and criticism all get thrown his way.  In a way, very similar to David Guetta; another polarizing artist in his own right. But like Guetta, there is no doubt that the following that Armin van Buuren has is nothing short of pandemonium. Without the need of top 40 hits on the billboard chart, Armin has gained a legion of fiercely loyal fans over the years; the same ones that made him #1 for so long.   It’s in this respect Ultra’s choice for the final act of the show actually makes sense.  If you’re going to close one of the biggest festivals in the world, might as well do it with the man that can deliver the knock out blow like he has done so well in the past.  Regardless of musical style, Armin van Buuren has reigned supreme as a king of not just trance, but EDM as a whole.

Which brings us now to that moment of taking the decks.  After a quick little snap of a photo with Guetta, Afrojack, and his buddy Ferry Corsten, he jumps right into it. Those who were at the main stage all night may not have realized that this was actually his second set of the night, having already performed for an hour at the ASOT 550 arena of the festival.   Stylistically, this second main stage set was very different from the ASOT set; and it had to be.  Those tuning into the global broadcast of ASOT 550 and the live crowd present at the ASOT arena were already fans and followers of his (or the other trance acts on the lineup).  Pretty much any song that was played at that stage had fans jumping with excitement singing along to the tunes they already knew and loved. The main stage crowd, after being rocked by hours of house from Kaskade, Fedde Le Grand, and Guetta himself, may not have been sold right away to the trance sound. Armin  had to bring out the big guns and win the crowd over; and he certainly delivered.

Starting out with a bang, Armin started with a banger from his new A State Of Trance 2012 compilation: “The Fusion”. Aptly named, the combination of trance, progressive, and electro sounds was the perfect opening transition from David Guetta’s sound to his.  The bass was heavy and the melodies were in full force with anthem after anthem of tracks new and old.   Some stand out spots:

-Mr. Brightside (Marco V Treatment) was a good pick for the pop crowd.  Definitely a track not to forget about for the DJ bag.

-W&W (MaRLo Remix) sounds HUGE with that big of a system.  Wow!  Not to mention that little break in the middle (Make Some Noise visuals) had a ridiculous buildup to the drop.

-Let me just say I totally marked out huge for Ferry Corsten coming on stage with Armin.  Besides “Brute” being one of my favorite tracks lately, the drum edit that Armin has done makes it sound that much more epic live.  The two legends and two of my favs on stage together was a rare moment that I’ll always remember even though I wasn’t there.  Not to mention they looked like they were having a blast.

-In And Out Of Love is a song that will always be a staple for big Armin sets.  No matter what remix, the crowd seems to love it.

Early on in the set, it was apparent the crowd was his.  As the true professional that he is, Armin knew what crowd he was spinning to and he completely won them over.  I personally knew people at the event that had no idea what they were in for with his set and left that night as fans of the sound.  That was very special to hear.  Track after track that kept the energy high and the thousands on their feet, it was obvious that Ultra had chosen the proper closer of the night.  A testament to his love of EDM, you never really saw Armin stop smiling.  There is no lie in the expressions that he had and the funnier was obvious he was having.  Watching him makes it nearly impossible to not start getting as enthusiastic yourself.  Of course with Ferry’s appearance, the set was that much more exclusive and personal.   With the music, the atmosphere, the crowd, his own excitement, and the overall connection, he really made the stars align on this one to deliver a moment that will never be forgotten in Ultra Music Festival history.

It’s no secret that EDM has taken off in the USA. With festivals like Ultra and Electric Daisy Carnival, moments like these are possible on US soil. Armin’s appearance was a true statement that EDM is global and brings people together.  Aside from his legions of fans, artists of other genres admire him as well (why else would Afrojack and David Guetta want to take pictures and hang out with him).  And why not?  Success doesn’t come easy.  Success comes with years of hard work, dedication, experimentation, and integrity to oneself and others.  Armin van Buuren embodies all those qualities.  I don’t think anyone else could have accomplished what he did this night and I’m sure many of his peers in electronic music would agree.  You couldn’t have a better ambassador of trance to the masses than Armin van Buuren.  He may not be technically #1 right at the moment, but he’s shown why he has been and always will be for trance fans.  Don’t be surprised to see him at the top once again before it’s all said and done.  Long live the king; AvB.

Kendra Aker and friends: Amanda Berkowitz, Natalia Jaramillo, Gabrielle Chretien, Anthony Ebright, and Cardinal Newman High School student James Madison II, volunteered at the Habitat for Humanity of Sonoma County in Sebastopol, Ca on January 7th, 2012. A great way to kick off the New Year! On this beautiful Saturday morning Kendra and the crew worked alongside the Habitat for Humanity Staff and also the father of one of the families that will be moving into this location. The foundation, walls, floors, and the roofing have been in progress since the Summer of 2011, therefore, the crew helped with the construction of the first floor joist and exterior wood paneling around the perimeter of the house. Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to improving lives by building modest, affordable homes in partnership with the communities and people in need. I personally would like to know what is your musical background?

I studied the piano at a music school for 7 years.  It was really cool!  I played at many shows and festivals.  I had a lot of piano practicing lessons so I really stressed out back in the day.  Right now I really appreciate what my teachers did for me so ya it was really great for me.  It really helped my music making skills!

Is the piano the only instrument you play?

I play a little bit of the guitar but only a little.

So you’re 21?

Ya, my birthday is next week!  I don’t have any plans.  I’m going back to my town to spend time with my family and my girlfriend.  So heading back to my home after this tour.

How much time do you get to spend at home?

Right now it’s not so much because I only have like three or four days next month of down time because I’ve had a really big month.  September has been really busy for me… I had like 8 shows in 8 days!  Ya the beginning of September was really hard for me.  It was like seventeen flights to four continents in eight days!  So ya I’m a bit tired!  All I want is to go back home and go to work in the studio.

Well it’s hard to name people like mentors but for sure!  Everyone has someone behind the scenes who gives some help.  Alexander Popov has helped me a lot with knowing how labels work with all the conditions and what I need to do with my music because I didn’t do anything with it at first.  I didn’t send it to labels; I didn’t show it for musicals or DJ’s.   So he told me about it and I started to send tracks to labels, which was the beginning.  But back in the day like five or six years ago I had a really closed mind with trance and he showed me a trance video.  Like try to imagine six years ago!   But since then I tried to learn more about trance.  And about three years ago I decided that I wanted to make music and start DJing and now I’m here because it was my dream.  It was my dream to make music and look at the crowd to see their faces!

And now you’re living that dream and you can see how your music affects the crowd by looking at their faces!

Ya sometimes you can be exhausted from music production.  Seventeen hours in the studio and then traveling a lot can be hard on your health.  But when you start to think that it’s your dream– it’s what you wanted to do and have, so you feel much more bright!

Where do you see yourself five to ten years from now?

That’s a really hard question!  I mean look what already happened so fast!  Even the trends of music change so fast!  There’s so many styles, so many new popular styles, and it’s already hard to know how to change your music.  But right now I’m going to continue to keep doing what I’m doing.

You’ve produced many remixes in the past and some originals; can we expect an artist album soon?

Right now I’m trying to focus on my original productions but it’s hard to tell with an artist album.  It’s hard to talk about an artist album because it has to be really complete!  It takes a lot of hard work and you need to spend a lot—A LOT of time in the studio so right now I’m not ready for it.  But I do have some ideas for the album!  I have a bunch of tracks that I want to finish that won’t go to the label directly; they will go to the album boss!  But we’ll see what happens!

Have you thought about playing around with other genres like House, Drum & Bass, maybe Dubstep?

Ya for sure!  I don’t want to be just one style.  If you stick to just one style you can lose a lot of ideas.  Really cool tracks can inspire you or help you produce something really crazy!  So I prefer to listen to a lot of different styles and play a lot of music—not Drum & Bass and Dubstep but something around Trance and House music.

A State of Trance 500 in Den Bosch was  massive!  Pretty much the entire trance family here in San Francisco were all watching you!  How do you handle that kind of pressure?

I worried a little bit in the beginning.  Especially right before I got on stage!  There was a lot of people so I was kind of shocked!  It’s kind of a different feeling because you see a lot of people and you start to get nervous but you tell yourself that you need to stay focused and focus on your DJ set.  So I definitely was nervous and had butterflies in my stomach but I was ready for it!  Because as I said when I went to school I would play the piano at big festivals!  But A State of Trance was sick and one of the best shows so far!

Well we are looking forward to seeing you more in the future and you’ve definitely made an impact here in San Francisco— you haven’t even gone on stage yet!  Personally I think you’ve made a huge impact on the genre of Trance music and we can definitely expect a lot of great things from you!

How do you prepare for a big tour like this?

Chad: Um, I think the last 3 years have been kinda like preparation.  You start playing a gig every 3 months and you build into a gig hopefully every month and then as your profile grows.  Ours got to a place that now we’re playing sometimes 2 or 3 gigs a weekend.   So you just have to get comfortable in your own skin and in front of different audiences.  Honestly the hardest gigs, for me personally, are when there’s only 20 people in the room; early in your career when you’re trying to come up, they’re right up in your face and watching everything you do.  I mean when you’re playing for 80,000 and you’re up on a big stage, and there’s a big performance going on behind you with the lights and digitals, a monkey can stand up there and look cool with all the lasers going on, but when it’s a small intimate venue and all eyes are on you it’s a lot harder to perform.  And earlier on that’s how it was for us and that’s where we developed our ninja skills.

When on stage you guys have a really big connection with the fans.  You even call your fans the Tritonians!  How do you bring that out?

Dave: One thing that we really love about this music that it does make you dance.  But one thing that we love to portray is our energy.  It brings it out in us.  We like to reach that out to our fans as well and we’re gonna enjoy it a lot more if  they enjoy it.  And so we’re feeding off everyone’s energy  and the night will just keep getting better and better.

Chad:  I mean we’re DJ’s… and we’re also producers, we compose music, but we’re there to play.  It’s boring to just stand up there and mix.  With technology these days, mixing is not that hard.  So in a sense, we’re super hardcore cheerleaders.  I can say that and laugh at that, because it is kinda funny… but it’s kinda true.  I mean we’re trying to get people to have fun, we’re trying to get them to have a good night.  We want to get involved, we want to interact with them to show them that we are as passionate about the music that we produce as much as we are about the music we DJ and that’s what Dave was saying.

Can you tell us about your music video?

Dave:  It was so much fun it.  That was our very first music video!  I was up at 6:45 in the morning!

Chad: 5:30 for me!

Dave: We met at my studio at 6:45 ready to go out.  Chad, myself, and the producer for the video took us all around in downtown in downtown Austin to North and South Austin. We were jumpin in trees, creeks, rivers…

Chad:  It was Man vs. Wild that day.  Bear Gyrlls would have been proud.  We had on the gear; we were out there doin it! Day 2 was interesting too though.  It as the real party set.  I don’t want to giveaway too much but it was an adventure and something we had a lot of fun doing.

You guys have a lot of energy and a lot of motivation when you’re on tour.  Between the exhaustion of traveling to shows and jet lag, what brings your energy up?

As far as the album goes.  How did the title “Piercing Quite” come about?

Chad: A couple of ways.  A play on words for the track obviously we wanted to release piercing quiet.  And the way that one came about was it was just a metaphor for what we do we do with sound.  It’s just a cast of imagery in your head of soft pretty moments to even raw, hardcore energetic, piercing moments.  It could bring upon all sorts of things.  But at the end of the day we wanted a title that would catch you and unique and we felt at the time, piercing quiet, the original track, had been one of the biggest singles to date.  And we wanted to bring back one track that we loved, beef it up for the clubs.   We always get requests to play Piercing Quiet.  Yet at 2am, people are going for it.  It’s like this compressive, real, chill, summery track- which is fine for some DJ’s.  But for our energy and where we get to in our sets, it just wasn’t there.  So we redid it for that reason.  Some people love it, some people hate it.  We love it because we can drop it at 2am and set the floor on fire.

 

Do you think this album represents your signature sounds as far as recruiting new fans?  Do you think it achieves what you wanted it to?

What do you see for 2012?  How can you top 2011?

Are there any rituals/traditions you guys do before a show?

Dave: That’s a good question. In fact we do. Sometimes depending on the show, we have to get to point where we tell ourselves that we are by ourselves, we are not on stage, there is no lights, there is nothing. Sometimes Chad & I will have a little prayer.

Chad: A little prayer to make sure we are on solid ground.  We don’t drink when we play. We don’t do drugs. We don’t do any of those things to calm our nerves.  It’s really a lot of orange juice, red bull, water, & sleep

What are the strengths you two see in a DJ duo vs a solo act and how do you help each other?

Chad: That’s a good question. I think as a duo, cause I’ve DJ’d before on my own, and I know how it’s like DJing with Dave,  it’s great having somebody there who’s on the mix, while the other person is working on the visuals, or thinking about where we need to go in the set, communicating what people are reacting to and what people aren’t reacting to. What you are seeing  vs. what I’m seeing. As well as, if Dave’s working on a mix and it’s a long mix, and it’s in key, and he’s doing some trickery over there, I already have the next track queued up or ready to be queued up. You can kinda get two or three tracks ahead, especially when you have four decks.  Quick mixes, it’s all about quick mixes, you can get into the next track right away.

Why did y’all use different vocalists on the album and not just Cristina Soto?

Dave: Variety. We wanted to show variety of vocal talents.

Chad: And Christina is amazing. She knows she’s our girl. But like Dave is saying, to us a vocalist is like another instrument to embed in songs. Christina has a very unique, very amazing, very beautiful voice.  But you could instantly tell it’s Christina. But we wanted to do something different, so people can see our variety.

Where did your name “Tritonal” come from?

Chad: We went through so many names, so many bad names we will never tell you! You are not gonna get ‘em out of us!  One of the things we came up was Tri-tone.  And we liked the fact that the word Tri-tone is musical, it’s a chord. It got like an interesting history. Back in the old school days when the Roman church was running things, that chord had a distinct tonality; it used to be called the devil’s chord, and was outlawed in church and stuff. But we are not evil guys! It’s a cool chord! But the word Tritonal is an explosive. It’s 80% TNT. So, when you put together something that’s explosive and something that’s musical, we felt like that would have a good impact, A.  And B, that’s a name you never heard before, and C, it’s unique & it’s catchy you know. So with those qualities, we are like boom! That’s it! Lock N’ Load!

Michelle Nicola De Jager-Travers (Johannesburg, South Africa)

What were your childhood influences in the realm of music and how do you feel this has affected their production/composition techniques?

Chad: We both come from musical influences. I have a mother who had five sisters, and all five sisters were travelling singers.  They had old vinyl records and stuff lying around the house that I grew up listening to. Grandmother is a piano player. My grandfather is a guitar player. My mom is a singer, so I grew up in a musical family. That said, I was a crazy little kid who needed to go out. I was involved in athletics & friends a lot. I played piano as a kid, but I think when I was like 14-15, I really go into music. And it’s at that point a lot of my friends were deciding to go in the DJ route. Instead of saving up for vinyl, I saved up and got like studio gear. First thing I got was this box that you could program beats on, and I thought it was so cool, to make loops. And from there it just kinda grew.

Dave: I grew up in a musical family too. My mom played piano & my dad radio DJ’d for a station for about ten years.  I was growing up with my sister, she ended up teaching herself how to play piano, and I ended up learning that. I loved melody so much that I got into trance and classical music. I wanted to make trance so bad.  The music I love so much, it’s so melodic, that’s the reason why I loved it, and it carried me through some rough times as well.

Lori Taylor (Virginia)

David, I’ve known you since you started out on this venture; it’s cool to see how the music has grown! Where did you all meet and start working together?

Chad: Online Dating Service!

Dave: We sure did, didn’t we?

Chad: Matchmakers.com go check it out!

Dave: It was about the time Chad & I got the Virus TI synthesizers.  Virus TI is a hardware synth, it’s one of the best out there for trance production. The thing is incredible.  And we were sharing our thoughts, ideas, and technical problems; and we were actually sharing each others music online on the Virus TI forum.  I showed Chad some of my projects, and we actually came up with the idea of maybe we could do  a track  together or something. Chad and I started talking every day, then we ended up working on a mix together, it was a remix for Armada. From there, it took off.

Jordan Goff (Sammamish, Washington)

Do you guys still play Halo at all? I know you two are big fans, but the hype has pretty much died off. Regardless, are you two stoked for the new Halo 4 release?

Chad: Oh wow, the Halo fans…

Dave: Halo fans are back!

Chad: We don’t play as much as we used to. We still play it, we hammered it first. It had a lot of buzz.

Dave: It was the time the game came out. I just thought the score was amazing. The theme music to Halo 3 is absolutely incredible. Now one else has done it.

Chad: Now that the album is down, we will take some time out for some creative journey.

Dave: As for the game itself, I would love to play it.
